The initial description sounds like the typical marketing blob from the CheckPoint sales people.
CheckPoint is the market leader and as such defines the standard. They even patented the phrase "stateful inspection" (see http://www.checkpoint.com/products/technologies/stateful_inspect.html) - the competition uses names like connection tracking for this basic functionality.
The current CheckPoint FW-1/VPN-1 version (R65 HFA40) is quite stable and delivers a reasonable performance for a software firewall. Acceleration on OS level (e.g. IPSO flows or Nokia accelerator cards) is supported by the (chargeable) SecureXL feature on most platforms.
The new R70 version comes with "software blades", which is nothing else than a plugin architecture. The modularity is so fine that on multi-core systems load-sharing on processor core level (via the chargeable CoreXL feature) is now possible.
